Brittany is one of the cultural regions of France. Great part of French history took place in this region and left mark on it. Guard towers, keeps, ramparts, country houses, drawbridges and castles are part of that history and today they are tourist attraction.

1. Fort la Latte and Cap Fréhel

They don’t look-a-like or have something in common, but it’s the trail that connects Fort la Latte and Cap Fréhel that makes them special. It’s footpath alongside ocean, on the edge of the cliffs, 70 meters above the sea. It’s a 4km long marked (and safe) path, from Fort la Latte to Cap Fréhel, with several viewpoints.

2. Château de Kerjean

Although damaged during French revolution, Kerjean castle still stands as a beautiful country manor from 16th century. Country manor was a country house for wealthy people, and Kerjean is just that. With stylish architecture and surrounded with nature, it outshines modern day villas. It has courtyard, small chapel, nearby park and very interesting dovecote, which are all open for public.

3. Château de Kérouzéré

Even though it was a manor house, it looks more fortified than Kerjean. The reason for that is its exposure to the sea nearby, and attacks from there. Today visitors can enjoy watchman tower and view over the sea. Besides that, also open for public are armory, chapel, rooms, stairs, etc.

4. Château de Josselin

Built in 11th century, it is one of the oldest castles of Brittany. It once had 9 towers, but Cardinal Richelieu dismantled four of them. During it’s last rebuilt by Anne of Brittany, a touch of Renaissance was put in architecture, one of the first influences of Italian artists in France.

Inside there is a marble bust, made by famous French sculptor Aguste Rodin.

Today it is only possible to see it from the outside, as it is residence of Josselin de Rohan, 14th Duke of Rohan, former President of the region of Brittany

5. Solidor Tower

It not a castle, it’s a tower as the name says. Solidor Tower was a keep that controlled mouth of river Rance. Today, it is open for public, and attracts tourist with it’s fairytale/captured princess look.

There might not be a princess on the top of Solidor tower, but there sure is a magnificent view at the sea.

6. Château de Saint-Malo

Located in the city of Saint Malo, this castle was the foundation of the city. During medieval time, it was a fortified island, that wasn’t just a town, but also a fortress to keep bay of Rance river safe. Saint Malo castle was built on the island which is now connected with the mainland.

It have very old streets, with old houses, that once represented typical costal town houses. Walk on the ramparts is a top class tourist attraction.

7. Château de Dinan

Chateau de Didan is not really a castle. It’s keep of town called Dinan. But what makes it special is its 2600m long rampart, that surrounds the old city. Walk on the rampart of Dinan is a great experience, with a nice view on the town.

The keep also has two drawbridges, one that connects it with outside, the other that connects it with inside the town, which was a good defense against attacks, from the enemy outside, or rebellion inside.

8. Château de Trécesson

Château de Trécesson is one of the typical medieval castles. Built on the lake that surrounds it, Trécesson was well protected from the enemies. Castle is connected with land by the bridge over moat that leads to a huge gatehouse.

Legends follow Trécesson castle, one about white lady and other about headless curate. Château de Trécesson is a private property, but tourists can look at it from the outside.

9. Château de Suscinio

Suscionio castle was first built as a place for vacation. Between seaside at the front, forest at the back, and with plenty of space for hunt, it was perfect country house. Later was fortified so it could be protected from the attacks. Already damaged by French revolution, Suscionio was sold to a merchant who continued with the demolishion by selling stones from castle. Today it is fully restored.

10. Château de Vitré

Chateau de Vitré has such a history - survived five month siege in 16th century; Parliament of Brittany was placed in Vitré castle during plagues, three times; was home for several French families, until 17th century, when it was abandoned and it started to decay. Then a county jail was built instead of residence.

Today, after reconstruction and return to its original state it’s one of the France’s most imposing castle.
